PCIL’s Commitment to Those Who Served: Supporting Veterans with Disabilities in Mercer and Hunterdon County

Updated: Nov 10

PCIL Supports Veterans, Read Now

Every November, as our nation honors those who served, the Progressive Center for Independent Living (PCIL) proudly recognizes the Veterans in our community who continue to demonstrate strength, perseverance, and dedication—long after their military service has ended.

For many Veterans, the transition from military to civilian life can bring unexpected challenges—especially when living with a disability. Whether the disability was acquired during service or developed later in life, Veterans, like many other people living with disabilities, often face barriers to employment, transportation, accessible housing, and community connection. That’s where PCIL steps in.

Standing Beside Those Who Served

PCIL serves people with disabilities in Mercer and Hunterdon County, New Jersey, helping them live independently and remain active members of their communities. For Veterans, that mission is especially meaningful.

Veterans bring a unique set of experiences and strengths, but they may also encounter complex systems like the VA, Social Security, or state disability programs that can be difficult to navigate alone. PCIL’s team can help connect Veterans with disabilities to resources and supports tailored to their individual goals—whether that’s returning to work, improving daily living skills, applying for food assistance, or becoming more involved in the community.

Programs That Empower Veterans

Many Veterans who come to PCIL benefit from programs designed to build confidence, independence, and connection:

  • Independent Living Services: Offers one-on-one guidance on finding acccess to housing, transportation, and daily living skills so Veterans can live independently.

  • Peer Support Groups: Inclusive spaces like Life Through Different Lenses, R.E.C.C., and our Community Connections Recreation Group give Veterans an opportunity to share experiences, reduce isolation, and build friendships with others who understand their journey.

  • NJ SNAP Navigator Services: Assists Veterans and their families in applying for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), helping them access healthy food and essential resources that support financial stability and independence.

Accessibility and Advocacy for All

Beyond direct services, PCIL works to ensure that local communities, businesses, and government agencies in Mercer and Hunterdon County are accessible to everyone—including Veterans with visible or hidden disabilities.

Through ADA accessibility audits, emergency preparedness training, and inclusive policy advocacy, PCIL partners with municipalities and local organizations to remove physical and social barriers. These efforts not only make our communities safer and more inclusive—they also honor the service of Veterans by ensuring they can fully participate in civic life.

A Call to Community

As we celebrate Veterans Day, PCIL encourages everyone in our community to recognize the ongoing contributions of Veterans with disabilities. Independence doesn’t end with service—it evolves through community connection, accessibility, and support.

If you or someone you know is a Veteran with a disability in Mercer or Hunterdon County, PCIL is here to help. Together, we can turn challenges into opportunities and ensure that every Veteran has the tools and resources to live independently.
